Lincolnshire Hedge Laying

A specialist countryside contracting business run by Matthew Davey. I have over 30 years’ professional experience in traditional hedge laying. Hedge laying is the only service I provide. This focus allows me to deliver consistent, high-quality work rooted in traditional craft.

I lay hedges in the Midland style, producing strong, neat, and stock-proof boundaries. My work is practical and long-lasting. I work throughout Lincolnshire, including Lincoln, Market Rasen, Gainsborough, Louth, Wragby, and Horncastle, for farmers, estates, and private landowners.

I am a member of the National Hedge Laying Society, and my work follows recognised traditional standards.

What is Hedge Laying and Why It Matters

Hedge laying is the traditional method of restoring an overgrown hedge. Selected stems are partially cut and laid over to encourage fresh growth from the base. This creates a dense, living boundary rather than a line of unmanaged trees.

A properly laid hedge controls livestock and shelters land. It also supports wildlife and strengthens the wider landscape. When carried out correctly, hedge laying can extend the working life of a hedge for decades.

When is the Best Time to Lay a Hedge?

The best hedges to lay are those planted around 10 to 15 years ago. At this stage, the stems are still young and supple. This makes them ideal for laying.

Hedges of this age respond particularly well to the Midland style. When laid correctly, they produce a very thick and dense hedge. The result is a strong boundary that will last for many years.

This is also the ideal time to remove unsightly plastic spirals and guards. Taking these out improves the appearance of the hedge and prevents long-term damage. The hedge can then grow naturally, without restriction.

I also undertake hedge laying for domestic gardens and private land. Traditional hedge laying is a practical alternative to fencing in rural and village settings. It creates a natural boundary that improves with age.

Garden hedges are laid with the same care as larger farm work. Scale and setting are always considered. The result is a tidy, durable hedge that fits its surroundings.

Farm and Estate Hedge Laying – Grant-Aided Work

I specialise in hedge laying on farms and estates. Much of my work is carried out under grant schemes such as Countryside Stewardship. I am familiar with current specifications and inspection standards.

Wherever possible, I aim to keep my costs at or below the grant rate. Work is planned efficiently and completed to standard. Disruption to farming operations is kept to a minimum.
